How To Recognise A Legitimate Hover Board
Hover boards have been all the rage over the past few years, popular with everyone from the elderly to school kids. This popularity has unfortunately meant that scammers have seen an opportunity to make some profit by selling fake devices. The sale and use of fake hover boards have given the devices a bad rap in the past because of the risks associated with using them. Fake hover boards are incredibly dangerous as they can overheat, catch fire, and even explode.
In this article we will examine some of the features you should look when looking for a genuine hover board. These tips will help you spot the real from the fake, which is a safe and scrupulous way to shop. Things to spot include manufacturer details, online purchases and battery types, among other things.
The Plug
As advised by Trading Standards, you should always check that the three-pin plug on the model states that it is made to BS 1363. If this information is not included- for whatever reason- don’t buy the product. Another important tip is that you should look out for the shape of the plug. Clover shaped plugs have been deemed unsafe, so it’s best to stay away from them!
The Manufacturer
Knowing the manufacturer details when purchasing a hover board is incredibly important. Check your device for specific markings or traceable manufacturer information such as the contact details and name of the manufacture or importer.
The Fuse
For this tip we’re looking again at the electrical plug components of the hover board and in particular the fuse. Over the years there have been many complaints about incorrect or counterfeit fuses being used in hover board plugs. Many of these complaints have been surrounding the amp rating. Incredibly, some of the worst cases of counterfeit fuses include cases where the fuse itself has been forged. There have been instances of cardboard fuses being used in some hover boards and this has led to serious electrical issues and even life threatening fires! To avoid any issues make sure you check the fuse, and the plug when you purchase your hover board.
The Battery
Many counterfeit hover board stories in the media make an emphasis on the batteries used. A fake, faulty, or badly installed battery can end up causing damage, fire and even dangerous explosions. When you’ve purchased your hover board- before you use it- check that it comes with branded batteries. Poorly made Chinese batteries can lack overcharge protection which means the battery heat will keep rising. This is an overheating and explosion risk.
Online Purchases
Online shopping is one of the most popular ways we purchase things in this day and age. And with a slew of online stores that sell hover boards popping up everywhere, it’s easy to get scammed and end up with a fake device. We should all take care when making online purchases at all times, and especially when we are buying electronic devices such as hover boards, or other large electronics. To make sure you are getting a genuine device, make sure you check the reviews of the product or seller. Check for little things such as grammar, spelling mistakes, or things that just don’t seem right on the website. Do your research and check for the company’s head office. Is there an address? Does it fit with how the website/company portrays itself? If you have any problems is there a landline number you can call for assistance? It’s important to note that if a company is based abroad it might be more difficult to receive assistance or direct help in the form of a refund or return. Read the small print on the website and take note of anything that looks suspicious or weird.
